
Khyle B. Wooten (he/they), a native of Philadelphia, PA, is Assistant Professor of Music Performance and Director of Choral Activities at Ithaca College. He maintains professional activities as a conductor, educator, clinician, researcher, collaborative pianist and composer. Previously, Wooten served as Associate Director of Choral Activities at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and has fulfilled prior K-12 teaching posts with charter schools in the cities of Philadelphia, PA and Atlanta, GA.
At present, Wooten leads ongoing research on the life and music of Lena McLin and extended choral works of Black women composers. He continually presents advocacy and lecture-recital sessions on such topics at regional and national conferences. They are an inaugural fellow of the Future of Music Faculty Fellowship with the Cleveland Institute of Music (2021) and an inaugural cohort member of the New Canon Project (2023); a mentorship initiative jointly curated by the American Choral Directors Association and the American String Teachers Association. Additionally, Wooten completed commissioned pieces for the Ithaca College Treble Chorale, Cincinnati Song Initiative, and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra MINA String Quartet. His recent choral works include Assurance (Gentry Publications), Sancta Maria (Music Spoke), Life and Death (Hal Leonard) and The Dream Keeper (Santa Barbara Music Publishing).
Now in his eighteenth year of service, Wooten is the Director of Music of EmpoweringWord Ministries in Philadelphia, PA. Concurrently, he is in his third season with the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers as Associate Music Director. Further supporting ventures are grounded in his membership with Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, the American Choral Directors Association, and the National Collegiate Choral Organization.
Wooten holds degrees in music education and choral conducting from Lincoln University of PA (BS), Georgia State University (MM), and Florida State University (PhD).
