Forty-two years after their name was struck from an ACDA program booklet for containing the word “Gay,” the New York City Gay Men’s Choir finally received the standing ovation decades in the making. In an act of restorative justice envisioned by ACDA East President Amanda Hanzlik, the ensemble returned to the 2026 Eastern Division Conference, transforming a 1984 act of institutional exclusion into a masterclass in modern reconciliation. The performance, a poignant mix of unapologetic joy and collective catharsis, reached its emotional peak when a veteran member from the original 1984 roster took the stage, finally claiming the bow he was denied forty years ago under the choir’s full, pride-filled name. It was a vivid reminder that progress is always possible when we possess the courage to listen, reflect, and intentionally expand the reach of our song.
ABC shares this story, including interviews with Amanda, commissioned and Grammy Award wining musician, Scott, Hoying (who joined the choir in the performance of his new work, Never Go Away) and NYCGMC Artistic Director John J. Atorino.
