Music in Worship Chair
Chairperson: Dr. Anthony Leach
Anthony Leach is professor of music and music education at Penn State. He holds degrees in music and music education from Lebanon Valley College (Annville, Pennsylvania) and Penn State. A native of Washington, D.C., Leach taught choral and general music for fourteen years in Maryland, New York City, and Pennsylvania prior to joining the School of Music faculty in 1994. At Penn State, Leach teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in music education and conducts the University Choir and Essence of Joy. Leach served as Penn State Laureate Professor during the 2009 – 2010 academic year. He also serves as conductor of Essence 2 and the Essence of Joy Alumni Singers. He is also artist in residence at the New Bethel Baptist Church, Washington, DC.
Choirs under Dr. Leach’s direction have performed in festivals, competitions, and tours of the United States, Canada, Europe, and South Africa. Leach has served as guest conductor for choral festivals in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Kentucky, Nebraska, Utah, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Florida, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C. He has adjudicated choral festivals in the United States and Canada. For twenty-three years, Dr. Leach served as music director of the Capital Area Music Association, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and was accompanist for the United Negro College Fund Choir, New York City, and the Howard University Choirs, Washington, D.C. In 2004, Leach served as a co-conductor of the World Youth Choir, sponsored by the International Federation of Choral Musicians. Leach holds membership in the American Choral Directors Association, International Federation of Choral Musicians, Chorus America, National Association for Music Education and the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Leach currently serves as artist in residence at New Bethel Baptist Church, Washington, DC and as the Eastern Division ACDA chair for Music in Worship.
